Peaceful Protest

How have leaders who have brought forth change in our society overcome their obstacles?  And how their lives were at stake in bringing forth about the changes?

Mohandas Gandhi, India's central public figure, had led, assembled, and gathered the masses in a peaceful march and protest (successfully) for India's independence from British rule.
Consequently, his cost was his own life and the change took years to come alive.  Gandhi was assassinated with three direct gunshots on his chest.  And it is how the movie begins.  A man walks up to him and shoots at him suddenly aiming close-range at his chest.  Like most leaders that has brought about change—Abraham Lincoln, John F. Kennedy— Gandhi had oppressors as well as supporters.  Sir Ben Kingsley plays the role of Gandhi with remarkable physical transformation and of course, acting.  His figure has thinned drastically, downsized to Gandhi's small frame.

Here is the poem inspired by Gandhi's peaceful march and civil disobedience:

Peaceful Protest

How much would you bandy for your independence?
And why is a man adjudicated by his religion?
Is that all that comes in sight, his class division?
We march in peace, a manifesto for disobedience,
The gulf of religious bias that has us balk at admittance,
Not as equals, but cast down as we face declension,
Since we’ve met with upper hand, we march on with protestation,
And in spite of this great rein, we march in peace,
Though they may sock, smite, strike us as we muster,
Yet we go on because we must carry on our protest,
Protest we form as founder and agitator,
Til then, we hold and stand by our sovereign rights.
